The story of Medjugorje is well known to most Catholics. In 1981 six teenagers were playing together in the hills between the villages of Medjugorje and Bijakovici, when Our Lady appeared and spoke to them.

When the children told their parents the first reaction was skepticism. The apparitions, however, did not cease. She appeared again and again pointed until the skeptics have not lost any possibility of criticism. It is estimated that since then over 15 million people have visited this tiny place. Medjugorje has become one of the most important Marian shrines in the world.

There is plenty of controversy over the legitimacy of the visions, so the Pope has not recognized it as an official pilgrimage site. Yet every year, on June 25th, the anniversary of the apparitions in Medjugorje, more than a 100,000 Catholics from around the world visit it.

Citluk Brotnjo is the center of the region, a plateau that is located on the right bank of the Neretva River. Wine and tobacco are what it’s known for. In the area of Brotnjo there are many wineries that are in the “Wine Route of Herzegovina” in which you can taste and buy fine wines (primarily Žilavka and Blatina).
