Although it’s the capital of Croatia, Zagreb is sometimes overlooked as a destination by visitors to the country…which is a real shame, because it has plenty to offer! Sure, it doesn’t have the Adriatic sea or beaches, but it has many fine sights, plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars, lots of entertainment and regular events, a huge selection of accommodation (with something for all budgets), some decent shopping and is very easy to reach from elsewhere in Europe. The city with a tradition of almost one thousand years celebrated its 900th birthday in 1994. Zagreb University was founded in the 17th century, and it is one of the oldest in Europe.
Nine hundred year old Zagreb, capital of Croatia, lives a rich cultural life, with more than 20 theatres, 3 concert halls, around 60 museums and art galleries. It is a big centre of congress tourism, economic and business events, and trade fairs not only in Croatia but also in this part of Europe. We could summarize the impressions of the growing number of foreigners who visit Zagreb in one sentence: a city of a million inhabitants that has managed to stay romantic, clean, and which offers visitors pleasant walks and enjoyment in a city full of parks and pedestrian zones.
The Nature Park Medvednica is the perfect recreational center of all the inhabitants of Zagreb. On the Medvednica there are several caves, including one of the most greats of Croatia, the Veternica. The Medvednica is covered with snow for at least 100 days a year. Here are also many mountain huts and inns. In Medvednica is held every year the "Snow Queen" which is a ski race in honor of skier Janica Kostelić, one of the best in the world. This activity program is a well balanced mixture of activity, nature and culture. Your days will be filled with hiking and kayaking down most beautiful sceneries and through rapids of exotic river canyon… There will be enough time to sightseeing Zagreb and its impressive and profound history.
Trips are designed for flexible, energetic people who like to be active and have a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude. Zagreb can equally boast of its own “Zagreb sea”, the Jarun Sports and Recreation Centre comprised of a number of lakes and an impressive rowing course. If, on the other hand, you prefer indoor sports try the sports centres “Mladost”, “SRC Šalata”, “Dom Športova” etc. Taking part in and following sports is a passion with Croatians and many Croatian sports people and coaches have a world reputation.
Zagreb is the cultural centre of Croatia. There are 15 theatres, a dozen concert halls and numerous cinemas. Zagreb is also a European centre for modern and alternative movements in culture. The well-known music Zagreb Bienial Eurokaz Festival of New Theatre, the Contemporary Dance and Performance Week of Zagreb Artists, Zagreb Film Festival are all important parts of the European cultural scene. Zagreb is proud of its many galleries and museums where you can find or even purchase diverse works of art. Young people have plenty of opportunities for entertainment. There are many discos, pubs and cafés where one can dance the night away or just have a nice cup of coffee with a friend.
Croatia’s party city is without a doubt Zagreb. It has a limitless supply of bars, cafés, pubs and night-clubs suitable for all tastes. You have the Upper Town with the sinuous, bar-lined Tkalciceva street and the Lower Town with Bogoviceva and Trg Preradovica plus the Branimir Centre across from the train station. Then you have Out-of-Town down by Jarun Lake and south of the Sava river (where a car is most convenient). For the most part, the vibe is pretty relaxed in Zagreb clubs. Ruthlessly selective door policies and watery cocktails have not yet made inroads onto the scene. There are a few clubs where you’re expected to show up in movie-star fashion but they are a definite exception.
