Turistički vodič kroz Varaždin

Varaždin-

The City of Varaždin is located in the North of Croatia on the southern bank of the River Drava. The city lies along the Drava River on a fertile alluvial plain that slopes towards the River Drava from the southwest to the northeast. The plain slightly elevates in Haloze and Varaždin – Toplice Hills. This creates a region defined by natural borders located at the crossroads of Styria, Međimurje, Zagorje and upper Drava Valley. Varaždin has approximately 50,000 inhabitants, and is the cultural, educational, economic, sporting and tourist center of Northwestern Croatia. It holds 11 ‘Green Flowers’, the national awards for the most ordered city of inland Croatia.

Stari grad u središtu Varaždina

Its architectural heritage dated from the few wondrous years (from 1756 to 1776) when Varazdin, as a capital city attracted the region's best architects and designers. Notice especially the Patacic Place and Patacic-Puttar Palace in the town centre which dates from this period and the striking Town Hall.  Varazdin's artsy heritage is also apparent in its Gallery of Old and Modern Masters which displays a nice selection of paintings from Croatia and abroad but for an overview of the town's history, head to the Town Museum located in Varazdin's star attraction-Stari Grad. Despite its name, Stari Grad (Old City) was really a defensive fort with sturdy round towers. It held up well when the region was under attack from the Ottoman Turks in the 16th century. Wandering the courtyards, towers and passageways of the castle-fortress provides an evocative look at medieval defensive architecture even without a visit to the museum. Among the main sights of Varazdin is the building of the Town Hall (the city authorities have been having meetings here since 1523). In summer, guards in beautiful uniforms and huge bear fur hats stand guard by the Town Hall. There is also Draskovic palace (the 17th century). Particularly famous for its interior decorations are the Cathedral of Mary’s Annunciation (early 17th century) and the church of St John the Baptist, which is renowned for its gilded pulpit and frescoes made by Ivan Ranger.
