Turistički vodič kroz Split

split_riva-bei-nacht_foto-ante-verzotti

Split is the second largest city in Croatia, with just over 200,000 inhabitants, and is the largest city on the Adriatic coast. Coupled with its strong history – it emerged from a settlement around a palace built by Roman emperor Diocletian, and the city was also important within Yugoslavia – this lively city sure is worth a visit, however brief. Seeing as it’s something of a transport hub – with great air, bus and ferry links (and even some train services) – you’re bound to end up here at some point on your travels in Croatia. To get a feel for the city, why not watch the clip below? It is from a BBC programme called Francesco’s Meditteranean Voyage (broadcast in 2008) in which Venetian Francesdo da Mosta spent two months sailing through this sea. Here, Francesco visits Split and goes to see a local man who has a part of an ancient temple within this flat, before going to play the famous local game of picigin in the sea.

Marjan is the primary symbol of Split. Nature plated the northern slopes mainly in limestone, while the southern ones are set in stone, some layers of marl (tupina) and a rocky shoreline. From the eastern boarder towards the west, all the way to the cape St. Jure, it is 3.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide. Its three peaks, three unique belvedere's, are stretching above the sea 125, 148 and 178 meters, with a view towards Split, the surrounding islands, the Kaštela Riviera, Solin and Trogir. Citizens of Split, out of their affection for it, started with its afforestation in 1852, planting the first pine trees, and already in 1903 they have established the Marjan Association which has been taking care of this wondrous hill ever since. This beach is on the north-eastern part of Marjan. Partly sandy and on the sides rocky beach is hidden in a pine forest. Filled with numerous additional facilities; a restaurant, tennis courts, playground for children, showers, changing cabins, makes it ideal for families. Beach Kašjuni is westernmost of the Marjan hill, and the first beach from the beach Kaštelet western-ward. Popular for families with children.

The beach has a deep bay, small pebbles, a Café, and changing cabins. Bačvice, "We are going to Bačvice…", is tune often heard around the town, words of a joyous hymn to the municipal beach, officially designated as such in 1919. Bačvice is a phenomenon of nature, a sandy beach at the heart of the city, in the vicinity of the city harbor, and it can accommodate over ten thousand people. Firule, Nobody has the lungomare, a promenade by the sea, like Split! All the way from the  arjan peak or the Oceanographic institute you can take a stroll along the sea all to the eastern marine city limits like: Bačvice, Ovčice, Firule, Zenta, Trstenik, Duilovo. Trstenik. Beach Trstenik is on the east side of the city of Split, right next to Zenta and Žnjan beach. Pebble beach with an easy entrance into the sea is ideal for families with children. Žnjan, Beach Žnjan has settled in between beach Trstenik on the west and Duilovo on the east. It became very popular among the citizens of Split with the arrival of John Paul II to Split in 1998.

The history of Split is over-flowingly rich and turbulent to fit in just a couple of sentences. Although the Split area was earlier inhabited by the Greek colonies, Emperor Diocletian should be considered its first citizen and founder, starting his lavish villa of around 300 square meters near the great city of Salona in 293 AD, only to retire from the Roman throne within its walls after building it for ten years. Turbulent centuries that followed turned the villa into a city, conceived by the fugitive inhabitants of Salona who fled from the Avars and Slavs. Many authorities changed hands in the city which, in the years to come, grew beyond the Palace walls, from the Croatian Kings in the 10th century, through the Hungarian and Venetian administration, to the French rulers and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Modern age and the 20th century "moved" Split from the kingdom of Yugoslavia, through tragic, yet heroic times of the Italian and German occupation during the Second World War when Split was one of the centres of anti-fascist resistance, to the Socialist Yugoslavia and the present period of the free and independent Croatia, member of the European Union. Tumultuous history leaves its trace in the everyday life of the city that always moved steadily forward, remaining the centre of this part of the coast to this day. In those mixtures of history layers, clumsiness was inevitable, sometimes even rashness in development, but today it is all a part of its originality. Great city beats today with the silent whisper of history, the lively spirit of youth and charm of the Mediterranean yet in every way also Croatian warmth.
