Ohrid is a city in the Republic of Macedonia and the seat of Ohrid Municipality. It is the largest city on Lake Ohrid and the eighth-largest city in the country with over 42,000 inhabitants. Ohrid is notable for having had 365 churches, one for each day of the year, and has been referred to as a "Jerusalem (of the Balkans)". The city is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, and tourism is predominant. In 1979 and in 1980, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were accepted as Cultural and Natural World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. In fact, Ohrid is one of only 28 sites that are part of UNESCO's World Heritage that are both Cultural and Natural sites. Ohrid is the leading touristic town in Macedonia, especially during summer. Ohrid is a true pearl, one of the most remarkably well preserved historic sites in entire Europe. It offers countless points of interest to tourists who want to travel to the Balkans and explore Macedonia. Matka Canyon is regularly visited by tourists from all over the world, by fans of extreme sports (mountaineering, whitewater and flatwater kayaking), speleologists, adventurers, recreationists. Besides these gifts of nature the canyon harbors a number of medieval churches and monasteries, most of which have been fully preserved, so Matka is also known as Little Mount Athos. The stretch of the lake shore from Ohrid to the monastery St.Naum, which occupies the south-eastern portion of lake Ohrid, is an endless, magnificent beach, where most of hotels are positioned. Along this area, tourists can see a number of villages where women still wear traditional folk clothes, villages whose populations still lives on fishing in the old traditional fashion.Within the junction of the modern and traditional, You will be able to tast, among other local specialties, the well known and unique flavored Ohrid trout, which only inhabits the clean waters of lake Ohrid, since the time of its creation.

The testimony of that time is: The Classical Theatre, which is considered to be built in the 4 th century B.C. and after more than two millenniums has been uncovered, reconstructed and used;The Fortress which was named after Samuel – the very first Macedonian – Slave emperor from the 10th century proves that the town of Ohrid even in the ancient time was a fortified one.Some Roman historians wrote about this as well. The Prince’s tombs from the 7th to the 3rd century B.C. from the Trebenishte region where the burial masks were discovered.
