Travel Guide to Mokra Gora

Mokra Gora

Mokra Gora is a valley in western Serbia, which nestles between the mountains of Tara and Zlatibor. Connected to it is the Šargan Pass, which to the north comprises a natural link with Zborište, Tara’s highest peak, and to the south connects with Zlatibor. The Šargan – Mokra Gora nature park is 10,813 hectares in size. The beauty of this region is in its turbulent landscape, with its deeply-carved, steep valleys and the gorges of the rivers Beli Rzav, Crni Rzav and Kamiška Reka, above which tower numerous peaks and passes. Together with Šargan, Mokra Gora was in the distant past situated on an important road route, which can be seen in the remains of an old Roman cobbled road and graves from the Roman era.

Today the areas of Šargan and Mokra Gora are best known for the Šarganska Eight, a narrow-gauge railway, famous for the impressive engineering that enables it to climb rapidly over a short distance. Alongside the track there are a number of exhibits – old locomotives and wagons which are preserved as examples of the engineering of yesteryear – making this a unique open-air museum.

Of special interest are the Hajdučka and Crvena caves, and in particular the Skakavac waterfall. There are also a great many mineral water springs, the best-known of which is the Bele Vode spring. Particularly attractive are the European black and Scots pine growing on the serpentinite rock which is naturally found in this area. These forests, just like the patchwork of mountain meadows and pastures, are inhabited by a rich variety of plant and animal life thanks to the climate and the bedrock they stand on. The area is home to 700 plant varieties, many of which are relicts or endemic species. Mokra Gora is a particularly valuable habitat for bird species. Of the 60 registered species, 29 are rare. Here one can encounter the Western Capercaillie, the Short-toed Eagle, the Willow Tit and mammals such as the brown bear, the otter and the wildcat. Visiting Zlatibor and Zlatibor area, as well as the town of Čajetina where you can visit the traditional manifestation “Pršutijada” and taste some local specialties prepared according to well kept secret recipes. Be sure to visit the National Park Tara and enjoy the beauties of Zaovine Lake and Perućac Lake. If traveling in summer, you shouldn’t miss rafting on the Drina River at some of famous Drina regattas.

The town is clearly defined around a rectangular plaza, whose main axis is defined by the entrance gate and the location of a small wooden church at the other end. The outline of the square, which is paved with wooden cobbles and cut wooden blocks, is defined by log cabins, each of which houses an element of the urban: a cake shop, a shop selling local traditional crafts, a picture gallery, a library, a restaurant and a cinema. The preservation of the traditional interconnectedness of nature and man is important for the protection, maintenance and development of this region. Today, however, Mokra Gora (eng. Wet mountain) is better known for its tourist attractions and breathtaking nature surrounded with valleys and gorges of the White and the Black Rzav and the Kamiška River.Old mountain cabins are scattered across meadows between streams and numerous mineral springs. And contrasting them, new cabins were built in the old traditional style on the hill Mećavnik that dominates in Mokra Gora. Set in a line in cobbled streets cabins create “Drvengrad” (eng. Wooden town), the famous ethno-village of the film director Emir Kusturica. While filming the “Life is a Miracle”, director was so enchanted by the beauties of Mokra Gora that he decided to come to live here, build a unique village and start a film festival “Kustendorf” that takes place in January.

At that time of the year, Mokra Gora is the perfect destination for skiers as the ski resort “Iver” is located only 10 km up the hill from Drvengrad. New modern ski center is fully equipped for spending a perfect day out in the snow: four ski tracks, ski lifts and artificial snow system. Nevertheless, the most beautiful way to experience this lush landscape is to take a train ride on old “Ćira” on the “Šargan Eight”, a truly unique narrow railway track. 8-shaped railway cuts through steep and rocky landscape and passes through 22 tunnels and crosses over a dozen of bridges, making passengers unaware of having crossed this unusual winding track from Mokra Gora to Šargan. At the stops along the way pride of green pines and amazing viewpoints will leave you breathless, with sounds of the nearby waterfalls. Mineral waters spring out deep in forest, and the best known spring is “Bele vode” (White water). It is said that its miraculous water cures eye diseases, therefore once at Mokra Gora numerous tourist will also come here to invigorate their eyes. Covered with mountain flora, the “Hajdučka” and the “Crvena” (Red) caves treasure the secrets of hajduci (hero freedom fighters in the Balkans) while the remains of a Roman road and cemeteries indicate that in the time of the Roman Empire a significant road was leading through this area. All these beauties of Mokra Gora won’t leave anyone indifferent as the landscape connecting two nature’s perfections, Mt. Tara and Mt. Zlatibor, must truly be something outstanding.
