Travel Guide to Kotor

Kotor

Not many towns around the globe have had the honour to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  In the ancient Montenegrin city of Kotor, which lies on the shores of the Bay  of Kotor, you would never imagine a more beautiful city, and Kotor has the highest honour of UNESCO’s declaration that the entire town declared as vital to our human heritage – who could miss that?! Kotor is a city where youthful exuberance and art meet. tradition and antique architecture. Located along one of Wold’s most beautiful bays is Kotor, a city of traders and famous sailors, with many stories to tell.

The Old City of Kotor is a well preserved urbanization typical of the middle Ages, built between the 12th and 14th century. Through the entire city the buildings are criss-crossed with narrow streets and squares. One of these squares contains the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (Sveti Tripun), a monument of Roman culture and one of the most recognisable symbols of the city. The Church of Saint Luke (Sveti Luka) from the 13th century, Church of Saint Ana (Sveta Ana) from the 12th century, Church of Saint Mary (Sveta Marija) from the 13th century, Church of the Healing Mother of God (Gospe od Zdravlja) from the 15th century, the Prince’s Palace from the 17th century and the Napoleon’s Theatre from the 19th century are all treasures that are part of the rich heritage of Kotor. Carnivals and festivals are organized each year to give additional charm to this most beautiful city of the Montenegrin littoral.

Boka Kotorska is situated in the south east part of the Adriatic coast. From the south east side Kotor is surrounded by the limestone massifs of the mountain Lovcen (1749 m), from the north west with the slopes of the mountain Orjen (1895 m), Radostak (1446) and Dobrostica (1570). Near Kotor there are two peninsulas, on the North West Vitaljinsko peninsula, and on the south east Lusticko peninsula. Those two peninsulas are separated by the straits Ostro, with the point which is the outer penetration in the bay of Boka Kotorska. Near by there are two other peninsulas, Vrmacko and Devesinjsko peninsula, which are separated by the gorge Verige. That gorge divides further bay of Boka Kotorska into two inner bays, Risan and Kotor bay. Kotor is situated on the narrow plateau under Lovcen, on the east side of the Kotor bay. Its center is made of the Old town, which is surrounded by 4, 5 km long bulwarks which are stretched from the sea along the hill slopes of Sveti Ivan up to the fortress on the top.

On the west side, along the shore, in the foothill of the hill Vrmac, we have lodgments Muo, Prcanj, and Stoliv, and in the east Dobrota, Orahovac, Perast, and Risan. Kotor municipality also has one part of Grbalj field, which is found in the south east from the bay. Together with the Upper Grbalj it goes out in the open sea. Near the cove Jaz, Kotor borders with Budva. During the summer as well as during the winter in Kotor harbor there are several smaller and bigger ships and luxurious yachts, or some other modern sailing objects anchored. In the recent years Kotor has a lot of foreign visitors. In Kotor harbor one can often see luxurious boats that are cruising around. Further down the coast, towards Dobrota and Perast, along with the stony shore, we can see anchored barges. On the azure blue sea you can often see gulls and swallows, and smaller birds, while in the rear of Kotor, mostly in the hills, that surround the town, you can also see foxes, rabbits, squirrels, wild pigs and others.

Museums in Kotor are packed with valuable, ancient artifacts that reflect the city’s stormy maritime history.   Architecture around Kotor has been pieced together from a dozen cultures during the span of a dozen centuries, and unlike any other place, in Kotor you can taste the true spirit of Montenegro’s stunningly beautiful coast. True to its traditions, Kotor is the host of many yearly traditional festivals and carnivals, and the city knows how to showcase its beauty well.  One method of really touching the imagination and romance the city has to offer involves the Kotor city walls.  As an ancient city built in a strategically fortified edge of Kotor Bay, the city of Kotor is a walled city.  The Kotor city 2alls are often illuminated during special occasions, and on the slopes above the city, the sheer magnitude of their heft and might will awe any visitor. As seen in the pictures included with this description of Kotor, the city walls blend beautifully at times with the city’s ancient stone houses, and at other times stand apart like ancient bastions to ward off invading armies.  The Kotor City Walls are more than 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) in length and reach a stunning height of 260 meters (850 feet!)  At the top of the ramparts you can find the fortress of Saint Ivan, reachable by walking along the walls.

The Kotor city walls in general offer an amazing opportunity to circumnavigate the entire city on foot while taking in it’s rich history and beauty from the best vantage point – from above! Finally, one invading army in Kotor that is hard to ignore involves tourism.  The Kotor City Walls seem to beckon, rather than repel visitors and Kotor is packed with high-quality restaurants and bars to suite all lifestyles and budgets.  Also, please don’t neglect Kotor’s great nightlife which seems to spring from the many restaurants, cafes and clubs that blend themselves into the city’s ancient mystique.  View of Saint Tripun's Cathedral. So, if you walk the Kotor city walls by night or gaze on one of the proud Montenegrin flags that often fly from the roof of a modern resident’s ancient stone house, please remember that Kotor is one of the must-see destinations, both in Montenegro and along the entire Adriatic coast! Other architectural monuments in Kotor abound, including the city’s glorious St. Tripun cathedral which rests along St. Tripun’s square, and don’t miss the city’s mysterious west entrance, where the narrow passageway peeks through the Kotor city walls.

Nightlife in Kotor mainly revolves round the night clubs, bars and the discos which the city of Kotor has to offer. The city of Kotor offers a good number of bars in the old town of Kotor. All these night joints are located on streets and squares surrounding the city. Nightlife in Kotor generally leads its way to some of the open bars within the walls of the old town. Since these open bars are not allowed to play music after 1.00 am, the action is shifted to some of the night clubs of the city. Maximus is supposed to be the best address for holding all types of nightlife activities in the town. The discotheque provides an excellent opportunity to indulge in all the nocturnal delights like dancing, singing, drinking and eating.

The club remains open till 4.00 am and provides ultimate entertainment to the visitors. A large number of foreigners take refuge in the discotheques at night and appreciate the variety of musical performances, including the national and local music.  With a state-of-the-art sound and light system, 3,000-person capacity, eight bars and a revolving roster of international DJs, Maximus opened in 2003 as Montenegro’s first dance club. Currently only rivalled by the Budva mega club, Top Hill, and the smaller My Club in Tivat, it’s the late night draw of Kotor. Check the music programme for the evening before setting off however, some nights focus on the locally popular Turbo Folk, while others will involve international DJ sets, so plan ahead to avoid any surprises.
