Travel Guide to Kornati

Kornati

Kornati islands include 89 uninhabited islands, islets, and reefs, for a total area of 217 m2, and are famous for the cliffs. It seems that the number of islands is even bigger because an old saying says: “As many days in a year, as many Kornati islands”. The biggest part of the Park is in fact its main island, Kornat, and the entire archipelago was named after it. The greatest fans of the Kornati islands are the boaters who find there what they seek the most: a sunny labyrinth of sea and islands, and the peace of the untouched nature. Enjoy an unforgetable boat trip to the most indented island group in the Mediterranean, situated in North Dalmatia, not far from Šibenik – the KORNATI Islands. It includes 140 uninhabited islands, islets and reefs with the area of only 70 km2. The Kornati islands are noted for their varied unusual forms and extraordinary relief structure, and especially the high cliffs. The entire excursion will be spiced up by a tasty lunch and wine.

The archipelago of numerous islands, islets and reefs, bays and shallow seas, rich with high and precipitous cliffs, favourable for breeding of Shags, birds of pray and Swifts, is a completely protected area - National Park Kornati. A large salt lake adorns the other protected area in this territory, the Nature Park Telascica. The most famous National Park in Croatia is, obviously, Plitvice lakes, which are a must see site for every visitor in Croatia. If you travel by car to any region in Croatia, you will be able to visit at least some of the National Parks in Croatia. In case you didn't know, Croatia has 8 national parks: National Park Plitvice lakes, islands Kornati, Mljet island, krka falls, Brijuni islands, Paklenica and the mountain chain of the Northern Velebit.

On some hills of the Kornati islands traces have been found of settlements and fortifications from the Neolithic period. It appears that Libernians inhabited the islands during the Iron Age as well as the Romans much later. During WWII, Tito's Partisans constructed a workshop to repair boats. The Kornati Islands were once owned by Zadar but in the 16th century Venice took possession and subleased the islands to Zadar families. Now they are divided between private owners in Murter and Dugi Otok. The lack of regular ferry transport has discouraged human habitation but those who own land on the islands graze sheep there and cultivate the land. The islands were visited by George Bernard Shaw who wrote "On the last day of the Creation God desired to crown his work, and thus created the Kornati Islands out of tears, stars and breath". There are now a few more materials involved. The islands are predominantly rocky and abound with karstic phenomena such as cavities, caves, gullies and crevices. Water collects in the karst cavities which provides the only source of water on the islands. Vegetation is scarce. There are no natural sources of water on the Kornati and the rainfall patterns are highly unfavorable to vegetation. The steep cliffs are home to various bird species such as peregrine falcons, common swifts and shags.

At the beginning of August the Zadar Dreams (Zadar Snova) festival brings contemporary theatre to the streets of Zadar. Focusing on the exciting and cutting edge, this festival attracts companies from around Europe. Film buffs will want to catch the Zadar Film Forum Festival at the end of August. For the duration of the festival, Zadar is transformed into a giant open-air cinema as screenings are set up throughout the old town. Zadar has great nightlife--unpretentious and varied-and the best part is that most Zadar nightlife is located in the town's historic centre. As soon as the winter chill leaves Zadar's streets,  the city's teeming population of students fill outdoor cafes and spill out of its bars. There are a couple of super-hip nightclubs but the biggest disco on the Croatian coast, Saturnus, is about 16km northwest of Zadar in Nin.
