Travel Guide to Belgrade

Beograd-panorama

Belgrade (Beograd) is the capital of Serbia, and has a population of around 1.6 million. It is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has since ancient times been an important focal point for traffic, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe. Belgrade is the capital of Serbian culture, education, science and economy. As a result of its tumultuous history, Belgrade has for centuries been home to many nationalities, with Serbs of the Orthodox Christian religion making up the majority of the population (90%). The official language is Serbian, while visitors from abroad can use English to communicate.

golf-club

There is one special place in Belgrade, Ada Ciganlija island, where the sport and nature admirers have found their paradise for adventure. Choose your favorite adventure out of paintball in the woods, breathtaking bungee jumping, aqua skiing on the Belgrade Sea or some thrilling rock climbing. Do you dare? Golf in Belgrade is a growing sport with top class courses and facilities available to foreign visitors. The best course in the country is the Belgrade Golf Course (locally known as Golf Club Beograd), which is located just five kilometers from the very heart of the Serbian capital. You will enjoy playing golf in a beautiful pristine area.

The Beach Olympics activity is a great way to see how you behave in a series of games that include ultimate frisbee, sailing and a raft challenge. At the end of the day will be treated with a tasteful beach barbecue. Serbia is a country with many rivers and some of the best rafting in the Balkans and Europe can be found here. Try out white rafting on Lim, “Merry Descent” on Ibar or on Tara River! Whether it is the adrenalin rush you are after or just an active excursion to the untouched nature. Rafting in Serbia will not leave you indifferent.

Belgrade's long and storied history is suggested by its architecture, which varies from Byzantine and Ottoman to neoclassic and romantic buildings in the older neighborhoods, and from Art Nouveau to brutalism and neo-Byzantine design in New Belgrade. The city's many theaters, museums, monuments and opera houses boast a deep and fissured cultural life while the beaches and rivers attract sunbathers, sports enthusiasts and partygoers on the popular floating river barges that serve as nightclubs. Belgrade is the capital of Serbian culture, education and science. It is home to the highest concentration of nationally important science and art institutions: the Serbian Academy of Science and Art, founded in 1886 as the Serbian Royal Academy; the National Library of Serbia, founded in 1832; the National Museum, founded in 1841 and the National Theatre, founded in 1869. The city is also home to Belgrade University, founded in 1869 as the High School, as well as the Arts University.

Belgrade Fortress (Beogradska Tvrđava) is the oldest cultural and historical landmark in Belgrade. Also of interest to tourists are Skadarlija, the central bohemian quarter; the Residence of Princess Ljubica (Konak Kneginje Ljubice); Captain Miša’s Building (Kapetan Mišino Zdanje); the Old Palace and New Palace (Stari Dvor and Novi Dvor); the Serbian National Assembly building and the Cathedral of Saint Sava (Hram Svetog Save). Numerous local and international theatre, film, music and other cultural events (FEST, BITEF, BEMUS, BELEF, October Salon and the Documentary and Short Film Festival) make Belgrade an important cultural centre. Belgrade is also host to numerous national and international conferences and fairs. The multipurpose Sava Centre is one of the most attractive venues for conferences and cultural events in this part of Europe. Over 40 international fairs are held each year at the Belgrade Fair.
