Travel Guide to Tara River Canyon

Tara River, Bosnia and Herzegovina. One of the longest rivers of the Balkans is river Tara. Canyon of river Tara is a unique phenomenon in its depth of 1000 and 1300 metres in some places. It is the longest river of Montenegro with its course of 150 km and at the river end, just a small part of it, flows through Bosnia & Herzegovina. Tara later flows into Drina river. River Tara has its average fall of 3.6m/km, and it makes whole bunch of waterfalls – rapids and cascades which give a big compliment to national park Durmitor, which River Tara belongs to. During its whole flow Tara gets large amount of water from numerous springs and tributaries. On the left side Tara has tributaries Ljutica and Sušica and the most important tributaries are Vaskovaška River and River Draga. The most important spring is spring of River Bajlovica, which is located on the left side of the River Tara in the cave Bučavica.

It yields several hundred liters of water per second and it falls to River Tara from 30 meter during its length of 150 metres. This is the scene which is hard to imagine it needs to be experienced. River Tara has a lot of special places, but the most valuable ones are its cascades. Roar of some of its cascades can be heard from the very edge of the canyon. Most famous ones are: Djavolje laži (Devil’s lies), Sokovina, Bijeli kamen (White stone), Gornji and Donji tepački Buk (Upper and Lower Tepački cascade), etc. Due to its water quality and unique eco-systems, in year 1977 River Tara was included in the program Man and Biosphere and it was signed in the ecological reserves of the biosphere of the world. By this move River Tara is protected by international convention which was adopted by this program.

Sports and nature Flora of River Tara has managed to preserve many special spices of flora originating from the most distant past. In the valleys of Tara certain spices from the ice age can be found. Beside these special spices, flora of River Tara is characterized by different types of forests: oak, ash, beech and birch. A large part of teh canyon is covered with needles trees and among them the special place is reserved for black pine. The most famous locality of pine is a primeval forest located in the Canyon and it is called Crna Poda – which is a nature reserve. Black pine here could be up to 50 metres high and up to age of 400 years. When it comes to fauna in the locality of River Tara mountain goats should be mentioned. Beside wild goats, deer and wild boar can be found here. River Tara is also rich in fish especially brook trout, salmon, grayling, chub, etc. Narrow passes and rapids, abysses and steep banks are this canyon’s characteristics and make it irresistible for everybody seeking adventures. Rafting and floating on the Tara belong to those attractions that turn high spirits into top fun.

In the place Djurdjevica there is a large bridge. Its construction began in 1938 and it was finished 1940. As the time passed this bridge became one of the symbols of this river. Even though it is build by human hands, when looked from above it looks like a natural part of Tara’s curves. It perfect fits into natural environment. The bridge is 154 metres long and its 135m high.Excursions to the very edge of the Canyon are read adventure. These places offer a magnificent view. One of the most interesting is Ćurevac (1625 metres high). From here it is possible to see panorama of whole national park Durmitor and Tara canyon. It is also possible to hear sound of great cascades located in the bottom of the canyon. Here you can feel strong and positive vibrations from which you will always leave satisfied and with unforgettable experience. Aside from different activities such as fishing or hiking, River Tara offers most one of the most challenging rafting in Europe.

Nightlife The population of The Canyon is very small. A few villages with 20 to 50 houses, placed on scarce planes, which can nowadays be reached by new roads. Rafting on the Tara River from Brštanovice to Scepan Polje -18 kilometres of beautiful scenery and 21 challenging rapids, takes 3-4 hours.
