Dragon’s Eye Lake is a unique geohydromorphological phenomenon located on the eastern Adriatic coast. Šibenik was first mentioned in 1066, in a document issued by the most important Croatian ruler – the king Petar Krešimir VI. Šibenik obtained the status of town in 1290, when the Šibenik Diocese was established. The harbor, which is connected to the open sea by the St. Anthony channel, initiated the development of seamanship, trading and the overall economic prosperity of the town. The fortress of St. Nicholas, the most important renaissance fortress on the eastern coast of the Adriatic, is located at the entrance of the channel. This fortress, together with other fortresses surrounding the town (St. Michael, St. John and Šubićevac), is the symbol of the centuries old continuous resistance of Šibenik. St. James’ Cathedral, which was built over more than a century, is made entirely of stone. It is also unique in its use of brave structures of stone slabs and ribs, built without using any binding materials.

In the 15th and 16th century, Šibenik was one of Croatia’s most important humanistic and renaissance centers. The scientist and visionary Faust Vrančić, is the best known figure of the Croatian renaissance. Among his many ideas, the drawing of homo volans (the flying man), stands out as it is the first printed picture of a parachute flight in history. The 14th century Church and Monastery of St. Francis, the first Croatian national Shrine of St Nikola Tavelić, has been an important ecclesiastical and cultural center for centuries. There are over 150 incunabula and the same number of valuable manuscript codices kept in the monastery collection, including the famous Šibenik Prayer, the first Croatian poem written in Latin script.

On warm evenings, everybody is outside. Sitting on benches and promenading the street are habits that still linger. Šibenik's nightlife is neither scenery nor divided into old and young, so in most places you'll find an unpretentious mix of people. Those of you wanting a little more will nevertheless not be disappointed. Young Croatians are a pretty cosmopolitan lot, and you would be surprised how urban the culture is. There are a handful of clubs which offer some decent nights, and a wide choice of bars to suit your tastes. Vor allem in der Saison haben viele Restaurants, Lokale, Cafés. The fun in Sibenik doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. Some even argue that that’s when it starts. Bars, clubs, lounges and live music venues—it’s all reason for us to put our dancing shoes on and raise to toast to Sibenik.
